Shanty Hollow

Some residents have yet to discover this amazing local treasure.  Shanty Hollow offers a large peaceful lake, boat ramps, fishing, and a hiking trail that leads to a pretty impressive waterfall.   I lived in Warren Co. for 10+ years before a life long native informed me of this waterfall not far from town.

A little help from google and I attained the whereabouts of this mystery place.  1200 Shanty Hollow Rd.  Not far, a little outside of town with minimal turns.  Just head out of town past Sugar Maple Square on 185 towards Rockfield.  After a few miles turn right at the fire station.  Then you’ll veer left at Lake Rd.  At the top of the hill follow the sign pointing right.

As you near your destination you will notice Shanty Hollow Rentals where you can rent a canoe, pedal boat or kayak for around $40.  This includes delivery and pick up at the lake by the owner who is a  very nice fella.  They also offer, camping, fishing, and guided night tours.  Pretty convenient if you don’t have your own boat and method of transport.

Upon arrival there are two parking options.  To the left and down the hill is the boat ramp area where you will find people out on the water or on the banks fishing.  The upper parking area to the right has the entrance to the 1 mile hiking trail which leads to the waterfall.  There you have it, a little piece of heaven, right here in BG.

The trail starts out gentle with a few fallen trees to duck under and climb over.  There is a challenging spot in a small valley where you have to climb up a hill.  Not too bad.  It’s one of a few places that might be a struggle for the very young or very old.  One thing about the trail is that it is not marked.  You should mostly veer up and to the right until you hear the waterfall growing louder at each bend.  It takes roughly 45 minutes.  The waterfall is very tall and a bit narrow with a nice little pool at the bottom to splash around in.  There are big flat rocks to rest and enjoy the scenery.  Also the waterfall is best viewed in the spring or summer as it starts to dry up around October.
